Introduction to Doctoral Studies in English: Fall 2014 Course Archive

This website was used for the Introduction to Doctoral Studies in English course in the Ph.D. Program in English at the Graduate Center, CUNY during the Fall 2014 semester.

The course aimed to introduce incoming doctoral students to the field of English Studies, broadly construed, and to larger issues in the academy. Major sections of the course focused on the history of the discipline, on the major activities of faculty members (publishing and presenting, working, and teaching), on digital turns, and on archival work. The full syllabus is archived on Github.

During the course of the semester, students used this blog to respond to three assignments and to write other posts about our course materials as they wished. We have collected our shared assignments here using the Anthologize plugin (many thanks to Lindsey Albracht for putting them together):

  • State of the Field (students identified major publication venues, blogs, conferences, etc. in their chosen area of study): PDF | ePub
  •

  • Annotated Bibliographies (students wrote annotated bibliographies containing at least 10 sources on a subject related to their scholarly interests): PDF | ePub
  •

  • Archives Assignment (students reflected on a visit to an archive of their choice): PDF | ePub

Beyond that, please see below for posts that individual students wrote during the semester.
